Step Into a Fairytale at Castel di Luco: A Hidden Medieval Gem in Italy’s Le Marche Region
My journey to Castel di Luco began after a memorable experience at the family-run agriturismo Zafferano e Dintorni, a peaceful countryside retreat surrounded by the natural beauty and tranquility of rural Italy. As I left behind the gentle hills of Umbria, the scenery began to shift. The rolling green landscapes transformed into dramatic valleys, forest-covered mountains, and winding roads that led me toward the charming town of Acquasanta Terme.
Then, almost as if it had appeared from the pages of a storybook, I caught my first glimpse of Castel di Luco. Rising above the landscape, the medieval fortress stood proudly with its circular stone walls and ancient towers perched on a travertine cliff. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Italy’s Le Marche region, the castle immediately felt like a place where history, nature, and family traditions come together to create a truly unforgettable experience.

It was easy to picture knights, travelers, and villagers crossing the same stone bridge centuries before I arrived. Although Castel di Luco was originally built as a defensive stronghold, today it tells a very different story; one rooted in family, tradition, hospitality, and the preservation of Italy’s remarkable heritage.
Adding to the charm was an unexpected greeting from a resident goat wandering within the castle walls, a beautiful reminder that at Castel di Luco, history and nature exist together in perfect harmony. It felt like stepping into a living story where the past is not just preserved; it is still alive.
A Castle Filled With Family History
What makes Castel di Luco truly unforgettable is not just the architecture. It is the people who have protected and cared for this historic property for generations.
Since the early 1800s, the Amici family has been the guardian of this incredible piece of Italian history. Rather than turning the castle into a typical luxury accommodation, they have carefully transformed it into a place where guests can experience what it feels like to live among centuries of history.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet owner Francesco Amici, whose family connection to the castle goes back generations. His family’s story is deeply connected to the Ciucci family, who managed the castle for centuries before the two families joined through marriage in the 1800s.
Walking through Castel di Luco with Francesco made the history feel personal. This was not simply a building filled with old stones and artifacts but it was his family home. He shared stories about growing up surrounded by medieval walls and showed me rooms that still carry the memories of those who lived there before.
One of the most special moments was seeing a room decorated with portraits and artwork of Francesco’s ancestors. Standing there, surrounded by generations of family history, I felt like I was witnessing a living connection between the past and present.
Today, Francesco and his sister Laura continue to care for the castle, making sure it remains a warm and welcoming home rather than just a preserved monument.
Staying Inside a Medieval Castle
Castel di Luco offers an experience unlike a traditional hotel stay. The castle welcomes a small number of guests, with nine unique suites that can accommodate up to 20 visitors. Each room has its own personality and is named after important women connected to the property’s history.
The suites are located inside structures dating back to the 1400s, combining original details with modern comforts. Instead of removing the marks of time, the family has embraced them, allowing guests to experience the castle’s authentic character.
During my stay, I stayed in the Giacinta Room, also known as the “Music Room.” The ceiling featured beautiful frescoes decorated with musical instruments like lyres and flutes. Looking out my window, I had views of the castle courtyard and the distant Apennine Mountains; a scene that truly felt like traveling back in time.
One thing I appreciated most was that Castel di Luco does not hide its history. The castle has experienced challenges over the centuries, including restoration after earthquakes in central Italy. Inside the dining area, visitors can still see old tally marks and handwritten notes on the walls, small reminders of the people who lived and worked there long ago.

During my private tour with Francesco, I explored areas of the castle that most visitors would never see. From the former prison to the historic wine cellar, every space revealed another piece of the castle’s long history.
Deep beneath the property is a mysterious sealed passageway believed to date back to the 1700s. While its true purpose remains unknown, local legends and stories continue to surround this hidden part of the castle.
What made the tour so memorable was hearing Francesco’s personal stories. His memories of growing up within these ancient walls brought the castle to life in a way that no history book ever could.
A Taste of Le Marche Tradition
One of the highlights of my visit was experiencing the food and hospitality of Castel di Luco.
Dinner was served in an elegant 18th-century salon, where beautiful vaulted ceilings and centuries-old details created the perfect setting for a meal inspired by the traditions of Le Marche. It felt less like simply dining out and more like stepping into the history of the region, with every dish telling a story of local ingredients, family recipes, and generations of culinary traditions.
The meal featured beloved specialties such as Olive all’Ascolana, the famous stuffed olives from Ascoli Piceno that are breaded and fried to perfection, along with homemade vegetable lasagna and other regional dishes prepared with ingredients from the surrounding countryside. A glass of Ciu Ciu Pecorino paired beautifully with the meal, highlighting the fresh, vibrant flavors that make Marche cuisine so memorable.
But the most unforgettable moment came with the digestivo. Rather than simply ending the evening with a tasting of wine or a traditional after-dinner drink, we were invited to experience a piece of the family’s own history. The wine came directly from the family cellar, a place where bottles had been carefully preserved over time. As we sipped, it felt as though we were being transported back through generations—sharing in the stories, traditions, and memories held within those walls. It was a reminder that at Castel di Luco, hospitality is not just about food and wine; it is about opening the door to a living heritage.
The experience continued the following morning with breakfast, where guests were welcomed with local specialties, homemade treats, and the same warmth that defined the evening before. For travelers who want to discover the true flavors of Marche, Laura also prepares traditional dinners featuring family recipes and regional dishes, offering a rare opportunity to experience the cuisine, history, and heart of this extraordinary place.

While Castel di Luco feels like a destination all on its own, it is also a wonderful base for exploring more of Le Marche.
Nearby Ascoli Piceno, known as the “City of Travertine,” is worth adding to your itinerary. Visitors can wander through the beautiful Piazza del Popolo, admire the historic architecture, and enjoy a coffee at the famous Caffè Meletti.

Castel di Luco is a reminder that the best travel experiences are not always about checking places off a list. Sometimes, they are about slowing down, listening to stories, sharing a meal, and connecting with the people who keep traditions alive.
Here, history is not something locked away behind museum glass. It lives in every stone wall, every family story, and every guest who crosses the bridge into this unforgettable Italian castle.
