The Creative Reset: Why Santa Fe is the #1 Destination for 2026

Santa Fe, New Mexico, had been at the top of my bucket list for as long as I can remember. So, when the team at Google Gemini invited me to their upcoming creator immersion trip, "The Creative Reset," I immediately said YES!
Known as "The City Different," Santa Fe was recently named the #1 Best City in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure. Between the inventive cuisine and the quiet spiritual retreats tucked throughout the city, the destination offers a multi-layered experience that consistently exceeds expectations. Whether you’re diving into the vibrant art scene or losing yourself in the neon-soaked surrealism at Meow Wolf, you are stepping into a true creative sanctuary.
After a few days soaking in the high-desert sun, I’ve curated the ultimate itinerary with the help of Google Gemini to help you ignite your own creative spark in 2026.
Know Before You Go:
Santa Fe sits at 7,200 feet, making it the highest state capital in the U.S. To keep your energy up, follow these suggestions from Gemini:
-
The 2x Rule: Drink twice as much water as you think you need. The desert air is beautiful but dry.
-
The "One-Drink" Limit: Alcohol hits harder at high altitudes. One margarita feels like three! Trust me I know…
-
The Sun Protocol: You’re closer to the sun here. Wear SPF, a hat, and do not forget your chapstick (my EOS balm was a total lifesaver).
-
The State Question: You will be asked "Red or green?" regarding your chile preference. Red is earthy/sweet; Green is bright/hot. As someone with a low spice tolerance, the Red was just the right amount of kick without being too much.
Where to Stay:
We stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado located just 15 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, the resort felt like a hidden sanctuary. Tucked into the piñon-studded foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the resort served as the ultimate home base for our high-desert escape.

Instead of a standard hotel room, you can expect a spacious Casita complete with a cozy indoor fireplace and a private patio offering the perfect vantage point for witnessing New Mexico’s legendary sunsets. This sense of place extends to the culinary experience, which is just as impressive as the landscape.
I highly recommend leaning into the "slow morning" vibe with room service; the French toast with caramelized bananas was delicious. For dinner, head to Terra, where the flavors of Northern New Mexico meet global inspiration against a backdrop of iconic mountain views.
The beauty of this property is that adventure and relaxation are woven directly into the grounds, allowing you to stay active or unwind without ever feeling disconnected. Take advantage of the local landscape through the Adventure Center’s on-site hiking trails and expert guides, or opt for a deeper reset at the on-site spa. Situated on a spiritual vortex, the spa offers high-desert healing that draws upon the grounding energy of the earth and sky. When you’re ready to explore beyond the property, a complimentary shuttle takes you straight to the historic heart of downtown Santa Fe, making it an entirely seamless retreat.

Whether you are lounging by the outdoor heated pool or exploring the private trail’s sweeping views of the Rio Grande River Valley, the resort feels like a place where the silence of the mountains helps you reconnect with your creative side. I loved that the night sky was so vivid that when I uploaded a photo, Gemini confirmed I was looking at Orion’s Sword, offering a bit of extra insight into the constellation I was admiring.
This was truly a place where the silence of the mountains helps you reconnect with your creative side.

Things to Do:
Santa Fe offers a look and feel unlike any other state capital in the U.S. From its rich heritage and vibrant culture to some of the best boutique shopping you’ll ever encounter, there is truly no shortage of treasures to discover. As the third-largest art market in the US, Santa Fe is a genuine cultural powerhouse and holds the proud distinction of being the first city in the U.S. designated as a UNESCO Creative City.
The diversity here is incredible; you’ll find everything from traditional Western and Native American pottery to cutting-edge contemporary abstraction, making it an absolute dream destination for any art lover.

To help you navigate the magic, I’ve put together a few must-visit spots located right in the heart of downtown that you can easily explore in a day or two. I used Gemini to help me curate this list of top museums and shops, and I love how it organized everything into a Google Maps-ready itinerary, complete with brief descriptions of what to expect at each stop.
-
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum: A beautiful tribute to the "Mother of American Modernism" and her deep connection to the New Mexico landscape. Seeing her iconic desert landscapes in the very light that inspired them is transformative.

-
The Loretto Chapel: Home to the "Miraculous Staircase," a mysterious wooden marvel with two 360-degree turns and no visible center support and the stunning Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

-
New Mexico Museum of Art: Located right on the Plaza, this stunning Pueblo Revival building features over 20,000 works of art and a peaceful central courtyard.

-
Canyon Road: A historic half-mile stretch packed with over 100 art galleries, sculpture gardens, and boutique studios.
-
The IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) is a must-visit for anyone looking to go beyond traditional history. As the only museum in the country dedicated to exhibiting, collecting, and interpreting the progressive work of contemporary Indigenous artists, it focuses on provocative, boundary-pushing pieces by living creators.

-
For a complete contrast to the traditional adobe galleries, Santa Fe is home to the original Meow Wolf. It’s a massive, immersive, and psychedelic art installation called "The House of Eternal Return" that has become a global tourist magnet. Enter the Multiverse. Spend your afternoon at Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return. It’s a mind-bending, immersive art space where you’ll crawl through refrigerator doors into neon dimensions. This place is super popular, throughout the exhibits it might be hard to capture content without anyone in the background but no worries thanks to Nano Banana you can instantly remove people in the background without compromising on the quality of your photos.

Wind down at Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery, where you can sip wild-fermented beers and spirits. I tried their prickly pear margarita, and it was absolutely spectacular! We had a blast unleashing our artistic sides with some hands-on clay work, making it a truly unique and creative way to spend the afternoon.

Throughout Santa Fe, you’ll notice vibrant strings of dried red chile pods known as ristras, hanging from almost every doorway. While these were originally a practical way to dry and preserve the harvest, they have evolved into the city’s unofficial symbol, representing both hospitality and the signature "New Mexican Style" of architecture (information obtained from Gemini).
Places to Eat:
A true Santa Fe landmark, Cafe Pasqual’s is a vibrant restaurant located just steps from the historic Plaza. This spot was recommended by my hotel driver, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Named after the patron saint of cooks, this James Beard Award-winning gem is famous for its festive atmosphere, hand-painted tiles, and incredible farm-to-table New Mexican cuisine.
I ordered the Toasted BLT with chile bacon, and OMGGGGG! It was absolutely delicious. Since I was visiting alone, I loved that they offered a communal table, which made the meal feel social and welcoming rather than just a quick solo stop.

La Lecheria - If you are craving a sweet treat this ice cream shop is serving bold flavors like their green chile ice cream made from premium ingredients.
The Pantry Restaurant, where I had their huevos rancheros (in the red sauce), their home potatoes were phenomenal. When visiting make sure to save some room for the blue corn cinnamon pancakes!

Need a pick me up, stop at the Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse, Santa Fe’s oldest locally owned independent bookstore. Here you can unwind, grab a cup of coffee, and pick up a new read.
Places to Shop:
-
Shiprock Santa Fe: A high-end gallery on the Plaza known for its exquisite collection of vintage Native American jewelry, textiles, and pottery.
-
Andrea Fisher Fine Pottery: A world-renowned gallery just steps from the Plaza, offering a masterclass in authentic Native American ceramic art. Featuring museum-quality pieces from the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico—from polished Santa Clara blackware to intricate Acoma designs—it’s the perfect place to learn about the rich history and symbolism behind these hand-coiled treasures. Best of all, they offer professional shipping directly to your door, so you can skip the stress of carrying fragile art through the airport.
-
Black Diamond Curio: The spot for high-end, rare Western pieces. Here I found some beautiful turquoise earrings. Santa Fe is considered the epicenter of turquoise in the United States. Its popularity isn't just a modern trend; it is deeply rooted in thousands of years of history, spirituality, and trade. Here you will find some unique and affordable pieces.

-
Parts Unknown: A fantastic upscale boutique located just a short stroll from the Santa Fe Plaza. It’s the perfect stop if you're looking for that "refined adventurer" look. They specialize in high-quality, outdoor-inspired fashion that blends rugged durability with Santa Fe style, think premium leathers, embroidered tops. Here I picked up the perfect brown leather jacket.

This trip was powered by Google Gemini, my ultimate travel concierge. If you’re planning your own reset, here’s how to use it:
-
The Packing List: Ask Gemini: "I'm going to Santa Fe in February. Generate a packing list for high-altitude layers and a spa visit."
-
The Cultural Guide: Use it to decode the difference between traditional Pueblo pottery and contemporary Southwest surrealism before you hit the galleries.
-
Choose Your Own Adventure: Have a free hour? Try: "I love vintage turquoise and cute cafes. Build me a 1-hour walking itinerary in downtown Santa Fe."
Santa Fe isn’t just a destination; it’s a vibe that stays with you long after you descend from the high-desert mountains. It is a sanctuary where you can finally silence the noise and reconnect with your creative soul. A huge thank you to the team at Google Gemini for hosting me and showing me exactly why Santa Fe is the ultimate setting for a creative reset.
