Slow Travel in Italy: Chasing Saffron, Truffles, and Authentic Moments in Umbria & Le Marche

While Rome's landmarks and the canals of Venice often define the quintessential Italian dream, my travels through Umbria and Le Marche revealed a more intimate perspective. In these regions, luxury is redefined through genuine human connections and time-honored family heritage, offering a slower pace that invites true cultural immersion.
Traveling through these lesser-known regions with Italy Charme, I discovered an Italy rooted in authenticity. Here, farmers proudly share centuries-old traditions, meals are prepared with ingredients grown just steps away, and visitors are welcomed like friends rather than tourists.

From harvesting saffron in the Umbrian countryside to searching for hidden truffles in the forests of Le Marche, this journey reminded me that some of Italy’s most unforgettable experiences happen far beyond the famous tourist routes.

Walking through the fields, we learned about the delicate purple crocus flowers that produce one of the world’s most treasured spices: saffron. We also discovered the many other products grown on the farm, including artichokes, wild asparagus, medicinal herbs, homemade jams, and herbal creations.

Italian saffron production is truly a labor of love. Each flower must be harvested by hand at sunrise when the blossoms are at their freshest. The tiny red stigmas are carefully removed one by one, then dried to create the vibrant spice known for its rich color, intense aroma, and distinctive flavor.
A Saffron Experience in the Heart of Umbria
My first stop was Zafferano e Dintorni, a family-run agriturismo located just a short drive from Palazzo Seneca. Surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the Umbrian countryside, this farm offers travelers a chance to experience rural Italy through agriculture, education, and incredible hospitality.

From the moment we arrived, I knew this was more than a typical farm visit. We were instantly greeted by the enthusiastic wagging tails of the house dogs, whose joyful barks offered the perfect, warm welcome into the home. Our host, Marta, matched their hospitality with her own genuine warmth, ushering us inside and sharing the rich story behind the land, the crops they cultivate, and the traditions passed down through generations.

This experience gave us a firsthand look at the beauty of agritourism; a wonderful movement that bridges the gap between travelers and the countryside. By opening their doors, farms like Marta’s allow visitors to deeply connect with sustainable agriculture, experience authentic rural lifestyles, and understand exactly where their food comes from. It turns a simple journey into a meaningful, educational exchange.

Seeing the amount of patience and dedication required to produce something so small gave me a completely new appreciation for this ingredient.

The highlight of our visit was sitting down for a farm-to-table meal prepared at Marta’s family home. Surrounded by the people who dedicate their lives to preserving these traditions, we enjoyed dishes created with ingredients from the land around us.
It was a beautiful reminder that in Italy, food is never just food—it’s a story. It’s a connection to the land, the seasons, and the people who bring those flavors to life.

For travelers visiting Umbria for the first time, Zafferano e Dintorni offers a wonderful introduction to slow travel. Beyond saffron experiences, guests can enjoy nature walks, bicycle excursions, tastings, and opportunities to learn about local farming traditions.
This is the kind of experience that allows you to move beyond sightseeing and become part of the destination.

A Truffle Hunting Adventure in Le Marche

After exploring the countryside of Umbria, our journey continued into the breathtaking landscapes of Le Marche, a region that still feels like one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. Known for its dramatic mountains, charming medieval villages, rolling hills, and beautiful Adriatic coastline, Le Marche offers travelers the perfect blend of nature, culture, and culinary traditions.

Our journey brought us to Agriturismo Ramusè, a beautifully restored farmhouse nestled near the town of Force, perfectly framed by the majestic Sibillini Mountains National Park on one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other. The estate is owned and operated by Paolo Ciccioli, a former truffle exporter whose vibrant passion, deep expertise, and profound connection to the land instantly made our visit unforgettable.

Led by Paolo and his extraordinary truffle dogs, Elektra and Briciola, we ventured into the ground in search of one of Italy’s most coveted culinary treasures. Watching the dogs work was an absolute highlight of the trip; their intense focus, sheer excitement, and incredible bond with Paolo beautifully illustrated the vital relationship between hunter and hound in this centuries-old tradition.
While pigs were traditionally used for truffle hunting due to their natural scenting ability, dogs have become the preferred partners for modern Italian hunters. Their agility and specialized training allow them to locate these hidden treasures efficiently without damaging the forest floor or eating the prize. For hunters like Paolo, these skilled dogs require years of dedication to train, making them both a significant investment and deeply trusted companions.
One of the most fascinating lessons from our experience was how truffle hunting follows the natural rhythm of the seasons. From the rare, highly prized White Truffle (late September to December) to the distinct profiles of the Summer Black and Winter Black Truffles, each variety offers a unique hunt and flavor profile.

No matter the time of year, a truffle hunt in Le Marche is far more than a food experience—it is a profound opportunity to walk Italy's forests, connect with local traditions, and discover the deep relationship between the land and its flavors.

After our forest adventure, we returned to Agriturismo Ramusè for the ultimate reward: tasting the treasures we had just discovered.

There is something incredibly special about eating truffles you personally helped uncover.
We gathered around the table for a traditional meal featuring handmade tagliatelle prepared by Paolo’s aunt, Anna, topped with fresh local truffles. Along with regional wine, homemade specialties, dessert, coffee, and organic sparkling wine, the meal became a celebration of everything that makes Le Marche special.

It was the kind of long, unforgettable Italian meal that reminds you why food is such an important part of travel.

Beyond culinary experiences, Agriturismo Ramusè offers travelers a peaceful countryside escape with comfortable accommodations, a relaxing pool, and easy access to both the mountains and coastline.
A Meal Worth the Journey
