While Italy’s iconic destinations attract more than 100 million visitors each year, a quieter, more refined experience awaits in the green heartlands of Umbria and Le Marche; regions where authenticity replaces crowds and serenity defines the journey. At the forefront of this alternative vision is Moreno Moretti, founder of the boutique luxury agency Italy Charme, who guides travelers beyond Italy’s busiest destinations toward landscapes defined by elegance, tranquility, and authenticity. Through a careful blend of sustainable, eco-conscious travel and immersive, expert-led experiences, Italy Charme redefines luxury as something deeply personal, intimate, and grounded in place.
Having spent time in these remarkably peaceful regions, I can attest that they offer a rare sense of tranquility far removed from the usual pace of tourism; a level of calm that lingers long after the journey ends and stands in striking contrast to Italy’s more congested destinations.
The Resilient Charm of Norcia
Our journey began in Umbria, a region where centuries-old traditions continue to shape everyday life. We first arrived in the historic town of Norcia, located roughly two and a half hours northwest of Rome, a place renowned as the birthplace of Saint Benedict and celebrated for its crisp mountain air, sweeping landscapes, and enduring cultural heritage. Despite the devastation caused by the 2016 earthquakes, Norcia has emerged with remarkable resilience, evolving into a thriving destination for cultural tourism, outdoor adventure, and authentic Italian hospitality.
Norcia is widely celebrated for its rich culinary heritage, most notably its centuries-old tradition of pork butchery so influential that it gave rise to the term norcineria. Despite a population of only around 4,000 residents, the town is home to more than a dozen renowned norcineria shops, many clustered around the historic center where visitors can sample regional specialties such as Prosciutto di Norcia, wild boar sausages, and prized black truffles. Local delicacies are so deeply woven into everyday life that they can even be found in vending machines throughout town.

At the core of the Norcia experience is Palazzo Seneca, a 16th-century historic mansion that embodies the spirit of Umbria through a curated blend of antique and contemporary design by local craftsmen. This boutique hotel offers 24 distinct accommodations, including four junior suites and a signature suite, alongside a private wellness sanctuary featuring a sauna, jacuzzi, Turkish bath, and lounge.
Co-owner Federico Bianconi represents a family legacy of hospitality that spans over 160 years. He views this heritage as a multi-generational labor of love for both the craft and the community, a commitment sustained by a dedicated team and the support of loyal guests. This foundation of excellence allows the town to maintain its global reputation for culinary distinction.

The Vespasia Restaurant: A Michelin-Starred Culinary Landmark
Holding a Michelin star since 2016, the hotel’s Vespasia Restaurant has established itself as one of Umbria’s leading culinary destinations. As a distinguished member of Relais & Châteaux and Buon Ricordo Restaurants, the restaurant is driven by a talented culinary team dedicated to reinterpreting the region’s gastronomic heritage through a contemporary lens. Using authentic local ingredients sourced from the surrounding countryside, each dish pays homage to Norcia’s rich traditions—a tribute also reflected in the restaurant’s emblem, which incorporates symbols of lentils, acorns, and the area’s prized black truffles.
Beyond its renowned gastronomic heritage, Norcia’s dramatic mountain landscapes and pristine natural surroundings make it an ideal setting for guided hiking and cycling adventures. Extending well beyond its famed norcineria tradition, the region offers visitors a variety of immersive experiences that foster a deeper connection with its landscapes, culture, and rhythms of rural life, including:
-
Join local truffle hunts in nearby oak forests, the natural habitat of wild boar and the highly prized black truffles (tartufo nero).
-
Observe the vibrant flower blooms on the Castelluccio di Norcia plateau during the months of June and July.
-
Take part in the Benedictine Celebrations (Feste Benedettine) in August or on March 21 for St. Benedict’s Day, featuring the "Corteo Storico" costume parade and traditional "ceri" torch offerings.

A Saffron Agriturismo Experience to Truly Savor
A visit to Zafferano e dintorni is among Umbria’s most immersive experiences, where this acclaimed agriturismo farm located just a short drive from Palazzo Seneca beautifully combines agricultural tradition, hands-on education, and genuine family hospitality.
During our visit to Zafferano ed dintorni, our host, Marta, offered a comprehensive look at saffron cultivation before leading a tour of the estate, where crops like artichokes and wild asparagus thrive alongside the prized spice.
The production of premium saffron in Italy extends across various provinces, including Umbria. This artisanal craft is notably labor-intensive, as harvesters must manually collect purple crocuses at daybreak to extract the red stigmas. Such a precise and dedicated approach results in a spice renowned for its intense potency and brilliant golden color.

Saffron production in Italy’s Umbria and Le Marche regions is a high-quality industry, contributing to a national output of approximately 450–600 kilograms annually.
Our experience concluded with a farm-to-table meal at Marta’s family home, highlighting the fresh seasonal bounty of the farm. Serving as a vital link between traditional heritage and modern rural tourism, Zafferano ed dintorni offers guests various ways to engage with the land, including educational initiatives focused on local farming traditions, immersive nature walks and bicycle excursions across the estate, and samplings of high-quality regional products, such as medicinal herbs and artisanal juices and jams.

Living a Fairytale in Le Marche at Castel di Luco
Following an enriching afternoon at the farm, we continued our journey to the breathtaking Castel di Luco, a remarkably preserved 11th-century medieval castle dramatically perched atop a travertine spur in the tranquil Marche region, near Acquasanta Terme and just 15 kilometers from Ascoli Piceno.
Originally built as a defensive fortress, Castel di Luco has remained in the care of the Amici family since the 1800s, evolving over generations into an elegant historic residence while preserving its medieval character. Today, the castle honors the family’s legacy through thoughtfully restored suites named after the Amici grandmothers, blending centuries of history with intimate hospitality. Managed by siblings Laura and Francesco Amici, the estate offers truly distinctive accommodations within structures dating back to the 1400s.
One of the highlights of the experience is dining in the castle’s magnificent 18th-century salon, where guests savor refined local cuisine beneath beautifully frescoed vaulted ceilings; a heartfelt tribute to the culinary traditions of the Marche region. During a private tour of the property, Francesco revealed fascinating historic features, including a former jail and a centuries-old wine cellar concealing a secret passage sealed since the 1700s.Every corner of the castle feels alive with history, made even more vivid through Francesco’s personal memories of growing up within its ancient walls.

Blending medieval architecture with modern comfort, it features intimate dining, frescoed rooms, and origins traced to a 1052 papal seal by Pope Leo IX.
In the kitchen, Laura embodies the spirit of Le Marche by crafting traditional delicacies such as Olive all'Ascolana. Using large, flavorful Tenera Ascolana olives, these appetizers are stuffed with a rich mixture of beef, pork, and chicken, then breaded and fried to a golden crisp—a dish that pays homage to the region's culinary heritage. Our dining experience also included a hearty vegetable lasagna, perfectly complemented by a glass of mineral-forward, organic Ciù Ciù Pecorino wine from the local hills. This immersive exploration of the region’s authentic flavors leaves a lasting impression, one that lingers vividly long after the journey has ended.
Caffè Meletti in Piazza del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno

Castel di Luco offers an exceptional gateway for exploring the captivating Le Marche region and the rolling landscapes of central Italy, ideally positioned near Ascoli Piceno, often referred to as the “city of travertine.” From this historic base, travelers are perfectly placed to discover one of the region’s most culturally rich destinations.
Ascoli Piceno enchants visitors with its beautifully preserved historic center, anchored by the Renaissance-era Piazza del Popolo, where the 13th-century Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo stands alongside the elegant Art Nouveau icon, Caffè Meletti. Established in 1907, the café remains a cherished social landmark, once frequented by senators and still celebrated today for its artisanal pastries and signature Caffè all’Anisetta—espresso paired with the local anise liqueur—alongside the refined Meletti Amaro.
Beyond its iconic squares, the city reveals a wealth of artistic and architectural heritage, from the Civic Picture Gallery, home to works attributed to Titian, to the Cathedral of St. Emidio with its remarkable mosaicked crypt. The surrounding area extends the experience further, offering glimpses of Roman ruins and remarkably preserved Renaissance streets that reflect centuries of continuity. Renowned for its lively café culture and deeply rooted culinary traditions, Ascoli Piceno completes a journey where history, art, and everyday life remain seamlessly intertwined.

A Truffle Hunting Experience to Discover in the Marche Region
Umbria and the Marche region are renowned for their truffle production, and another highlight of the journey was a visit to Agriturismo Ramusè, a beautifully restored farmhouse near Force that offers an authentic cultural immersion for anyone exploring this part of the Marche.
This peaceful estate is overseen by Paolo Ciccioli, a former truffle exporter who leads guests on genuine truffle hunting expeditions. Central to these treks are his expert Cocker Spaniel mixes, Electra and Briciola; these highly trained dogs are indispensable for locating precious black truffles.Following the adventure in the mountains, visitors are treated to a classic farm-to-table lunch. The meal features artisanal pasta handmade by Paolo’s aunt, Anna, which is elegantly finished with local wine and shavings of fresh black truffle. Beyond the culinary experiences, the agriturismo provides a tranquil sanctuary equipped with a suite, four bedrooms, and a swimming pool. Its prime location places guests just 30 minutes away from both the Adriatic Sea and the National Sibillini Park.
